However, as a result of a series of archaeological excavations carried out by Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) from 1962 on and of the extensive surface survey and mapping of the entire site by the Teotihuacan Mapping Project (TMP) (Millon, Drewitt, and Cowgill 1973), a fuller picture of the nature of Teotihuacan, the city, has emerged. Those six centuries witnessed the growth and transformation of this site from a regional shrine, attracting probably only a small complement of local adherents, to a highly complex and multifunctional city whose rulers were Page 4 able to govern an ethnically diverse populace of great numbers and to maintain order in the streets, marketplaces, and public places of a densely packed urban environment.
